Magic - Reusable Chalk Sphere
As s paraclimber I need all the extra grip I can get, and stuff does the job well. I was a bit sceptical at first but after using it for a few weeks I wouldn't go back to my previous chalk brand. Very happy with my new found grip and the extra confidence it gives me.
Magic - Reusable Chalk Sphere
I bought this because I needed a new chalk ball anyway and was already ordering some friction labs chalk. I figured, yeah it'd more expensive but what's a couple of bucks since I'm already ordering and then I won't have to cycle through what's already in it to get it filled with FL chalk. The first time I put my hand on this thing I realized it had been a great investment. Apparently all chalk balls are not created equal. There's just something different about the texture and the the way the chalk comes out of this thing that is amazing. In my opinion it's even better now that I've refilled with Unicorn Dust. I will be getting these every time I need a new chalk ball from now on.
I had another brand chalk ball I been using for a while. The issue I had is it barely put any chalk out. Not so with the magic chalk ball. That said, I still do throw some chunky in the bag with the ball and it keeps it perfect without a snow storm when I pull my hand out.
I can use less chalk and still have better stickiness somehow. The chalk ball is way better quality than just about any other one I've used and distributes the chalk perfectly every time. It's also bigger than most and fits in the hand better.
Friction labs has the best chalk to begin with, adding that and a mega oversized chalk ball how can you go wrong? You can't! It will help the chalk to last longer and your hands dryer. I use one in my bucket and small chalk bag ( helps the chalk stay in at the bottom too ) just like the rest of their products once you try it you'll never go back to filling your old sock with chalk or whatever you were using before. Happy Sending!
The chalk in the chalkball works great. After I put a new barrel lock on ball string, the ball works great. BUT, I also found that because the chalk doesn't leave much residue, I sometimes use it to improve drag of my hand while I work on my drawing tablet/monitor! BONUS! I also bought the sample pak, now I'm testing the different blends.
It's painful to miss a big lift because of a hand slip. Fictionlabs chalk does a superior job of reducing that challenge.
While the chalk in this ball is some of the best I've ever used, the ball it came in was super disappointing. I hate to be the person snowing down chalk at the crag, so I've always preffered using chalk balls over loose chalk, and was thus willing to pay even more of a premium to try friction labs chalk in ball form. However, within just a couple of climbing sessions all the chalk had worked its way out of the ball, and my chalk bag was left with a sad, shriveled, and empty chalk ball floating on a sea of loose chalk. So, I essentially ended up paying $14 for 2.2 oz of loose chalk when the 5 oz bag is only $15. Definitely not economical, and not what I expected.
I bought 2 w/ the preorder. While I liked the chalk, both balls leaked over half the content into the chalk bag. I scoped the chalk back into the ball, but they kept leaking out. Since these are the really fine stuff (vs the bam bam I usually use), they get spilled everywhere much more easily. E-mailed FL & got a they'll investigate the issue reply & then NADA...2 expensive chalk socks I won't be using. Come to find out I'm not the only one w/ the issue.
Chalk is super fine and lasts and lasts. Reusable chalk ball seems sturdy and isn't leaking. Have only been using it for a week, but I am very satisfied with the product.
My hands sweat more than average, so maybe not the best choice going with the ball, but I figured part of the appeal (aside from the obvious less mess) was being able to have the material absorb some moisture while re-laying a coat of chalk. For my hands the ball did neither. So I decided to sideline the ball and remove the chalk. I figured since I can't return it I might as well get out of this what I can. Unfortunately, I believe to make this system work, friction labs (and others) have to make the chalk extremely fine for it to effectively fit through the pores in the material. But at this point, the chalk becomes so fine it seems reminiscent of dust and, for me at least, ended up acting like hundreds of microscopic ball bearings to my tips more than a material to help adhesion. Glad to read this chalk system works well for others. Unfortunately for me it was a total waste...
I agree with another review that the drawstring doesn't have the tightest closure. Quite a bit ended up being loose in my bag but obviously this doesn't change the fact that the chalk itself is superior! I prefer the Magic chalk over Unicorn Dust but Unicorn Dust has been a good refill option, especially with the little bit of loose Magic I still have in the bottom of my bag. The ball lasted about 3 months of indoor climbing & bouldering 3 days a week for 2+ hours at a time. I'll never go back to any other brand.
I'm something of a connoisseur of chalk balls, having adopted one as soon as John Stannard invented them nearly 50 years ago, and basically used them ever since. The size, porosity, and closure of the FL ball are all excellent. But the closure should be improved. What is needed is an additional square of material with one side sewn into the drawstring hem on the inside of the pouch. You hold this out of the way when filling the ball, and then place it on top of the chalk before tightening the drawstring. This keeps loose chalk from leaking out of the "closed" drawstring opening, something that cannot be prevented with the current version no matter how tight the opening is cinched. Chalk leaking not only empties the ball too fast, but also leaked chalk accumulates in the bottom of the chalk bag and soon you are getting the excessive coatings the chalk ball is supposed to prevent.
So, after writing my bad review, friction labs sent me a paypal refund within about 30 minutes! Then, they emailed me and offered to send me a new chalk ball in case mine was defective. Now, upon further inspection, it appears that it may be. It doesn't seem to close all the way, which would make it empty so fast. I'm super impressed with their customer service and looking forward to trying the new one when it comes. Thanks so much!
It۪s not worth the money. I had maybe 2 days of use with it before it was practically empty.
stays on the hands longer with less excess flying in the air
I adore this chalk ball. It's nice and big and meaty. The chalk is awesome, just a little bit and my hands are super dry and sticky. Being in a ball makes it extra tidy, which is awesome, because who wants to be cleaning up chalk? If you're looking for a chalk ball, buy this chalk ball, it's amaze-ball
This is a larger ball than the one I had in my bag, but it just fits. The mesh is small, so chalk doesn't powder all over, but covers my fingers well. I am very happy with the bag and the great chalk.
The shape and size of the ball is just right. I have this ball in a wide mouth chalk bag. It delivers the right amount of chalk onto my fingers and gives me somewhere to wipe the extra. The Magic Ball has a really cool feel in the hand, it almost reminds me of a squishy ball for stress reduction.
The only thing I would say is that during your first climbing session it will soften up quite a bit, and you will need to tighten the draw cord_ No big deal!
The Magic Ball is Five Star for sure.
Bought a couple of these when they were on pre-order and gave one as a gift to my niece this Christmas. Was already using a BisonBall filled with Unicorn Dust, but this ball seems much finer in mesh and is noticeably finer chalk. Stick like a lizard, or a spider, or an ant, or other sticky critter with this chalk. Best I've had yet!
